Dear 2010 Jeff,
Happy birthday from Detroit in the year 2006. You ended 2005 by backpacking through SouthEast Asia and began 2006 trying to convince yourself and everyone you knew that you'd soon be living in Cambodia.
Every day you make it a point to tell somebody that you're going to sell the house, the car, and most your possessions as soon as you graduate in order to generate some cash and split for Asia. If you're honest with yourself, you'll admit that you're trying to convince yourself every bit as much as you're trying to convince them.
It doesn't matter so much that you leave Detroit so much as it matters that things have fundamentally changed for the better in your life by the time you read this. You're disillusioned with what it means to be successful in work, love, and life in general.
No matter how much money you make at your current job, or how good you become at it, in the end, it will never be more than car parts. It would be a shame to waste your life on car parts. I hope you still feel this is true upon receipt of this message.
Did you leave for Asia? Is your life better for it? Truth be told, things probably won't get any better sticking around Detroit. For our sake, I hope you got the hell out of there.
2006 Jeff
