Hi Jean (and anyone else who was hurt this way)
I'm really sorry we were all so mean to you when we were in the fourth grade at Broad Street School in Providence RI. I have no idea why we picked on you, except that for some reason it seemed like the thing to do.
I have a daughter now, and she looks so much like you did back then. She's also so sweet and vulnerable and quiet, just like you were. The kids say mean things to and about her, the same way that we did to you, and it breaks my heart.
Thank God the teachers handle this better now than when we were kids. Miss Tanner just turned her back on you and you must have felt so alone.
I hope you're OK now. I hope I've let you understand that the horrible way we treated you had nothing to do with who you were or how you looked or anything you ever did. We were all just mindlessly nasty.
I so regret hurting you now. I wish I could find you and let you know. I'll bet there are others who feel like this about you.
I'll bet there are many who feel this way about someone else that they hurt just by being a stupid kid long ago.
Love,
The girl across the way from you in Miss Tanner's Class
