Brian,
Five years ago you were 24, and were worried about aging and death. You were completely occupied with the state of the world, convinced that things were falling apart. But you were hopeful and dedicated to improvement.
You believed in people and their power to collectively build a better society. Has that belief been confirmed? I hope things aren't too dismal.
You believed in yourself, that you were a fundamentally good person who deserved love. You had just broken up with Kelley, someone who you could have loved, but who didn't want your love. I wonder where she is today? I hope you found someone.
If you feel boring, lonely, old, hopeless... remember that it's a question of perspective. You are an amazing person, more amazing than you were five years ago, when you fucked up your car driving drunk, lost your job and your girlfriend, and were riding your bicycle around the cold streets, broke.
I hope that your dreams of being a rock star have been realized. If not, it's not too late.
Yours truly,
Your former self
