Dear FutureMe,
Today I'm asserting that in 2025, (now for you), Electric cars will be the norm amongst the non-poor. 8 years is a hell of a short time frame, so it's quite the call to say the change will be so fast.
Petrol stations will already have begun their decline, because as soon as there was 10% of the market on EV's, they had to raise their prices, and with the writing on the wall no-one is buying an "old car" for fear of it being worth nothing when they sell. So petrol stations start closing, and the trek to get fuel is something the poor people do, with most people enjoying the convenience of recharging overnight.
The entire mechanic industry will be rapidly shrinking to service the much smaller market of Internal Combustion Engines that haven't yet been superceded. There will be stories in the news of people who bought businesses, franchises or expensive ICE cars that are now sitting on a worthless investment. Roadside assistance is almost exclusively for people with ICE vehicles, with staff from that entire industry now being displaced.
ICE vehicles now stick out because of their noise, and exhaust. Kids will be embarassed when their parent comes to collect them in a noisy car.
