Dear FutureMe,
I'm writing this to you today because I'm sad about the mistakes I've made in my teen years and have realizations that I want to share with you.
I don't think you'll have become a father by the time you get this in 2026, but I hope that at least you'll have an idea of when that might happen -- and upon getting this email, you'll assign yourself another reminder for the wisdom I have to share with you now:
Never fight with your wife in front of your children. People disagree, and they have arguments -- but in no way should the children have to deal with this. Solve your problems discreetly and behind close doors, absolutely without the knowledge of your kids.
Never swear or speak ill of others in the presence of your children. Never demean anyone. Don't expose them to any form of negative behavior.
When the time comes for them to be curious about the human body and the opposite ***, you along with your wife, be the first people to discuss this with them. I've seen through myself how the fact of ********* portrayed to a person in the wrong approach can negatively influence him. Also, don't view age-inappropriate videos and play age-inappropriate games in front of them.
I cannot stress the importance of this enough.
No matter what happens, no matter what big of a mistake they make, don't abandon them. Don't make them feel that they are unworthy of being your child. Don't be the father who just takes pride in their triumphs but disavows them for their failures. Let them know that you're hurt but don't give up on them. Be by their side. Whatever you do, NEVER hit your kids.
This is a Friday when I'm writing this to you on 2nd September 2016. I got out of the shower a while ago and will head out for Jummah soon. My dad hit my brother last night because my brother didn't know a couple of his answers well enough for his science test today (which apparently went on pretty well my brother said). Well it wasn't just his science test -- my dad was filing for US visas for all of us and my brother just kept meddling in rather than studying. The kid was actually being pretty annoying but that would've been totally alright if it weren't his exams the next day and if he wasn't displaying such a **** care attitude about it. But above all of this, the main thing is that he is pissed at me. My A Level results came out a couple of days ago and I got 2 Ds and an E. I can't apply anywhere in Bangladesh with these grades, and right now I'm at a pretty bad state in terms of future prospects. I could apply to a couple of US colleges though and I'm going to do that after I take the ACT after a couple of days. Fingers crossed for that; my only chance to shine after continual nosedives. I'll have to retake my A Levels in January 2017. So basically with my brother getting out of line quite a couple of times in the past few days, he unleashed his accumulated rage on the poor kid.
I totally hate my dad for hitting my baby brother because of me, and how he behaved last night. He didn't say anything to me(thank God my bedroom door was closed), although he did yell about how I was an utter failure. FutureMe, please don't behave like how my father does at times. It breaks my heart.
We all have a demon inside of us. Try your best to tame it. If you're having a bad day, don't say hurtful things to people for their tiny flaws if they've got nothing to do with your misery.
Well now you know what triggered this email. I hope you find this advice useful and agree with all of this even after ten years and hopefully haven't changed into a lowly *******! I so greatly hope that you have a beautiful life with beautiful people in it and all those sighs of the past have faded away.
All the best, Prometheus.
Sincerely,
Yourself from ten years ago
