Dear FutureMe,
Happy 36th birthday - hope you're not having a crisis and feeling old!
In the unlikely event that you/I/we still have the same email address you/I/we had in 2003, here's what you were worrying about in 2003.
Sprog should be grown up and 18 and left/leaving home by now, off to university or something. Right now you are thinking that when that happens, much as you will miss her, you will also be jumping around and whooping and doing a I-can-go-travelling-and-do-whatever-I-want dance and planning some very debauched behaviour to make up for a teenagehood lost to parenting. You might have grown out of all that by now though (hope not!).
Did your career get ever more corporate and did you lose sight of what made you go into this line of work? Right now your slightly worried that this will happen as bigger salaries tempt you away from meaningful work and you get better at sucking up to the suits. Have you become one of them? Remember your lefty feminist roots and keep fighting!
Have you sorted out the disasterous men situation yet? On writing this you have just finished with Robb (remember him? good at art, bad at girlfriends) and have a fairly dismal view of men and the prospect of future relationships. I really hope you've sorted it or found peace by yourself (and got some more cats).
I hope that fabulous exciting things I couldn't dream of now have happened between now and then, and I hope that you have coped with any shit things that came your way.
lots of love and hope from the past
