Dear FutureMe,
As I grew older year by year, I didn’t consider myself an adult. At the age of 16, I got my driver’s permit but I didn’t feel old. At the age of 17, I got my drivers license but I didn’t feel like I’m capable to go out and explore the world. At the age of 18, I started college but I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my future or what I want to pursue in life. At the age of 19, I had my first birthday celebration without my parents and family but I didn’t feel independent. Now looking forward to my 20th birthday, I don’t think I’ll feel any of these either. After all, I’ll still a 2nd year college student trying to enjoy my college life. But hopefully as I turn 21, I’ll slowly pick up the fact that I’m an adult and need to be independent and capable of myself. As I turn 21, the pressure of work, job, responsibilities, income, rent and communications in society will be coming soon. Maybe I start to realize the need to start planning out for what I want in the future. Maybe these are the pressures in life that actually make a child realize that they are slowly becoming an adult. Knowing how to drive, having love or not being with your parents does not make you an adult. It’s the past experiences and thoughts of what you want to be, what you want to accomplish in the future and how you want your life to be that make you realize that you are truly an adult now.
Love,
19-yr old you
