A letter from May 13, 2024

Dear Marni, it’s a random night in may. just finished watching glee, season two—did we ever finish the show? how are mama + dada? i hope you’re nice to them i have english homework i'm supposed to be doing, i’m like two chapters behind and i have a quiz tomorrow. i really hope you didn’t have some sort of epiphany and go into english. i hope you still love school and love learning and love to read even though you hate english. maybe you’re really good at french now and ap paid off. by the time you read this, you’ll probably have picked a school (or at least a major, hopefully) and know what you’re going to do with your life. i love you, but i doubt you’re ivy-bound or anything. upenn? georgetown? rutgers? it should be our birthday, school’s starting soon regardless of where you’re going. do you have a job? what are you going into? do you still sing? what artists have you picked up that i might like? still listening to my favs? do you still collect cds? i hope you still use the cd player. on that note, the spring concert is coming up (remember sea fever? has any song come close to that one yet? how was c2?) maybe you’ve gotten into some other hobby. tell me about that it’s may 12th and i’m with luca. i couldn’t be happier. he’s sweet and attentive and my dad likes him now which is amazing. oh my god, i like him so much. i love the way his arms feel around me. i love his laugh and the way he smiles with his eyes and how clever he is sometimes and how much he loves me. i hope he still loves you. i hope you still love him. it’s may 12th and i think im going to love him forever who are you still friends with? if i name names that implies that you’re going to be friends with different people when you read this and i don’t want that what’s the last book you read outside of school? what’s the last song you listened to? what’s the last thing you learned? what’s the last thing you laughed at? i’m going on a trip this summer for my 16th birthday. you’ve already done that. how was it? i’m taking 3 aps junior year, and probably more senior year. how did i do? did you lose your virginity yet? still do voice lessons with shelley? i have an audition in two days—the prom at villagers. did i get in? maybe it should be did *we* get in. are we the same person? you’re probably laughing at 15 year old you trying to be a poet but i’m writing this hoping you’re in tears **** i don’t know where you are or what your plans are, but as long as you’re here to read this i’ll be proud. you’re probably a lot cooler than i am, and i hope that makes you happy. it definitely makes me happy to think i’m getting cooler. try and do a couple things with me in mind even if you were screaming all the way down i hope you found a soft place to land (or are at least on the descent) im proud of you happy birthday, marni
