Dear FutureMe,
I am writing to you from 2022 for a Philosophy assignment regarding the two opposing sides of Politics: Liberal and Conservative.
According to Lakoff, the two sides are opposite sides of the same coin, representing family. The conservative model is best summarized as the "Strict Father" model, where ideas such as tough love hard work are given priority. The liberal side follows a "Nurturant parent" model where everyone should be given the freedom and resources that help them live to their maximum potential.
The ideas I have seen or heard of so far fit this model perfectly. Examples of these are the *** laws/*** reform laws, abortion laws, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. The BLM movement fits into this because of the different perceptions of the idea of "equal opportunity." Those who are politically conservative believe that this is not a good idea since it violates the notion of hard work and of the "self-made man." The politically liberal believe that this concept is sound because not everyone has the same starting cards and should have the same starting opportunities.
I have yet to see any exceptions.
Regards,
22-year-old You
