Dear FutureMe,
Today, Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all charges of George Floyd's ******. This is an important moment in time, a testament to Black America. It's hard for me to explain why, but I will try to the best of my ability.
When George Floyd was ******, there was outrage on both ends of the political spectrum. The Republicans tried to justify his ***** by ridiculing the Black Lives Matter movement, they said that the liberals were glorifying a man who died of drug overdose. They tried to defy the importance of his ***** by implying that he deserved it, for having drugs in his system, for having covid, and for a plethora of other reasons. He was addressed by the cops in the first place for some petty theft, using a counterfeit bill at the gas station, or something of that manner.
But the video of his ***** circulated the internet and traumatized many. It was evident that the three cops around him, laughing and taunting, had little remorse as one of them was kneeing George's neck. George cried for his mother, said he could not breath, and said he did not want to die. The Republicans say that he was being aggressive to the cops, or was not in compliance. The video was hard for me to watch. My brother was not as sympathetic, or phased.
What's ****** is that regardless of someone's crime, they are assumed innocent until proven guilty. It is not the responsibility of a cop to pursue justice the way they see fit, that is manslaughter. Many had justified Floyd's ***** because of his background.
There are a **** ton of socio-economic issues that are also wrapped in this issue as a result of America's poorly organized government. Like for example, the funding and heavy militarization of the police. I remember seeing a photo comparison of a nurse on the front lines of COVID-19 making PPE from trash bags, next to a police officer that had excessively expensive gear.
I remember what it was like in the heat of the movement. Anonymous, the hacker group, had hacked into the Minneapolis police department' website. There were millions of people protesting down the streets, and vandals had taken advantage of the moment to break into stores and businesses nearby. Police were decked out with a lot of protection and gear, had tear gassed the protestors. Water bottles were thrown at the police, which were then returned with bullets. It was so ******. There were instances when police had raided the makeshift first-aid stations organized by the BLM heads, destroying their water supplies and such.
What's worse is that a couple months beforehand, there were republicans with **** in hand doing their own protest. They were against the protocols for COVID, and refused to wear masks. Nurses were standing guard down the streets, **** in their faces, protecting their hospitals from the cars full of angry white people. The government had not taken out the tear gas to these aggressive, armed protestors. Nor were they as aggressive when the angry republicans went to raid the capital, after Trump had lost the election.
America is racist. America is torn. It's hard for lots of white people to understand the systematic oppression that Black people have to live with, especially because no one wants to be called a racist. It was hard for me to understand too, when I was 11 o2 12 and had just taken notice of the first wave of BLM movements. It's hard for my brother to understand, who is white passing, and has never experienced race based discrimination in his life.
America is capitalism taken too far, it's one giant consumerist entity. It's individualism justified in the name of 'freedom', enough so that it does not override other people's right to life and safety. America does not invest in education or health, it invests in militarization of authority. America exploits, it manipulates, and it is a crumbling nation led by idiots.
So yes, today is a monumental day. Even after Derek Chauvin had been bailed out of jail with donation money from the republicans, the rule of law has spoken. No doubt, there are still the other two cops to take care of. There is a new traumatizing Black ****** video on the internet every week. But at least for now, a shrivel of justice has been served.
