The coronavirus diaries

Students: Write a letter to your future self about life during this most unique time. This letter will be emailed back to you in four years, during the spring of your senior year. What do you want to remember about the coronavirus and quarantine? Who are you spending your time with? What are you doing while so many aspects of your normal, everyday life are on hold? Share the details you don't want to forget!

(EXAMPLE)

Dear Mr. C.,

Every week of this quarantine is the same, but also different. I don't spend time with anyone other than my family - my wife, two sons (ages 5 and 8) and two dogs. My brother-in-law is here, too. He fled New York City six weeks ago when things got bad.

During the week I spend the morning homeschooling my boys while my wife works from a desk in our bedroom. At 1pm we trade places. She kicks the kids outside to ride their bikes and I post new assignments and communicate with students and and parents over the phone and through email.

I go to the grocery store once, sometimes twice a week. Wearing a mask is uncomfortable, but it helps me relax when I'm out, especially when everyone else is wearing one, too.

It's amazing how tired we are by Fridays, even though we never leave the house. We spend the weekends cleaning the house, watching TV and eating pizza.

It's been great to spend so much time with my family, and I enjoyed the stillness that arrived when our schedules stopped. But now that we're six weeks in I miss the energy that I felt inside Riverside every day, my kids' little league games and Saturday trips to the Farmers' Market.

Many students continuing to work from home and do some of their best writing of the year. My newspaper students even published an issue of The Pirates' Hook from home. I look forward to a return to school in the fall, even if it isn't totally back to normal.
