Time Travelled — almost 5 years

A letter from December 31st, 2017

Peaceful right?

Dear FutureMe, Some thoughts as 2017 ends: Today is cold, coldest day we've had all year. It was in the teens and even snowed a little this morning - unusual for this part of the country. This was the year that I ruined Christmas Eve dinner - trying to cook too much on the grill all at the same time meant that the brisket was undercooked and the ribs were wildly overcooked. Hopefully by 2022 (seems so far in the future, but I know it's coming fast) I will have redeemed myself. :) I'm thankful that everyone in the family is healthy, but none of us are getting any younger and I hope that we're all still together for Christmas 2022. You've been blessed - you have a fantastic wife and great kids and a great family. Never forget that. Kids are mostly doing fine, but let's see where 2022 finds them. One of them should be doing well, but I hope the other finds his way. The job is still going fine, but at the end of the day it's not exactly soothing to the soul. I still keep telling myself that I should learn new skills or branch out some, but damn - you're the master of wasting time and getting nothing done so my expectations that I will have made significant changes by 2022 are slim. Maybe you'll surprise me? At least the current gig pays well enough, and the occasional free trip to a top notch resort doesn't hurt. But still... Speaking of changes, about that relocation thing - hopefully you're still not living in the same place as you were in 2017. I mean, in 2017 we have been in the same house for over 13 years already. It has been time for a change for a long time, but as of yet the stars haven't aligned. Maybe things have changed by 2022? In 2017, we lost one dog (he was a good old boy) and gained another (she's still young, but I think she'll be a keeper). Along those lines, taking care of a puppy was so much more work than anticipated. If there is a next one (and who am I kidding, I'm sure there will be), an older dog is the way to go. On a personal note - hopefully you've started getting regular exercise, eating a little better and drinking less, but, with inertia being what it is and all... well, hopefully you've made some changes. Life is indeed too short, the days go by so quickly. You're coming up on 60 man, it'd be nice to be around for a few more years. Cheers from 2017, and here's hoping that life is still mostly great in 2022!
