Dear FutureMe,
Hi! Well I've been meaning to write this for some time. I still don't even know exactly what I am going to say yet.
I've just been thinking about the Internet and computers and cell phones, etc.
Technology.
It's great when it's working (well maybe not in some circumstances).
I remember when I was growing up in the 50's, 60's and 70's how so much of this was just "science fiction". "Dick Tracy" and "Jetsons" kind of stuff! Well we still don't have flying saucers yet! That is not any that are cost efficient to use on a full-scale basis.
So many things we take for granted though.
I mean- when I was growing up, you actually had to get up and walk across the room and change the channel! We used phones with dial that you had to stick you finger in and twist it around for each one of the numbers of the phone number you were calling! And HORRORS! We had to wait for "snail mail" to get a birthday card or love letter or what-have-you.
We had to wait hours for our food to cook (not in all cases but many).
Now it's all "get-it-now!" "gotta-have-it-now!", NOW, NOW, NOW!!!!
Yes- I do wax nostalgic for the old days. Yet I do love much of this new technology.
I am glad that using today's technology we can preserve some of the past. For instance I volunteer each Thursday at the Dayton Historical Archives. I scan old photographs which are on glass plates. I scan them and someday they will be accessible online for others to view.
I hope we don't forget our past.I think it is important to keep those memories alive somehow.
I also wonder what is in store for the future.
I hope we someday get back on the right track (whatever that is or may be). I wonder sometimes if we are heading for a big downward spiral. Perhaps we are already on it?
It's kind of sad that now that it's easier to communicate with each other (come on now- who doesn't at least have one cell phone???!!!) we seem to be less connected than we used to be.
Again- I think we just take all of this stuff for granted.
I seriously wonder what we would all do if all of a sudden we were all cut off from our cell phones, land lines, computers, TV and radio broadcasts, etc. We would most likely all freak out for sure!
That possibility does loom out there.
We've come somewhat close many times. Well I could go on and on but I won't.
Just think about it.
